About

Yellow Belly is a website exclusively for current and prospective students of  the University of Lincoln.

We aim to provide information about the city,  university life and to promote topics of discussion among students and to have this information in one place rather than scattered across the internet and social media.

Yellow Belly is a nickname given to the people of Lincolnshire. Its origin is often disputed but here are a few of the explanations:

  • The officers in the Royal North Lincolnshire Militia used to wear bright yellow waistcoats.
  • A species of newt/frog/eel (people cannot agree which) was found in Lincolnshire which had yellow bellies.
  • The stage coaches that were used in Lincolnshire in the past had yellow body work.

There are many more possible origins but wherever the nickname came from ‘yellow belly’ has stuck.

Welcome to Lincoln our fellow yellow bellies!

To get to know our writers further, we asked them some questions:

  1. Where have you lived before in Lincoln?
  2. A: Park Court, – it was quite a nice, cheap place to live and I met some really nice people there. It’s close to the city centre and great to walk back to after a night out.

L: I lived in Brayford Quays and still do. It’s cheap, spacious and the accommodation staff is really nice. And we’ve got a gym!

J: I lived in Park Court. I loved the fact that it was so close to university so you could nip home for lunch and stuff.

N: I lived in Park Court with Jess, so yeah same as everyone else.

S: Last year I lived in the Pavillions. The rooms were really nice and I loved the fact that we had a TV in the lounge area.

  3. What’s your favourite thing/part of Lincoln and why?
  4.

J: My favourite part of Lincoln for me is the fact that everything is in walking distance so it’s so easy to get to everywhere.

S:  I like the Bailgate on a sunny afternoon, that and all along the Brayford heading to the Pyewipe.

A: Erm, it’s so hard to choose really… I love it all! But I think my favourite part is up Steep Hill around the Cathedral as it’s so pretty up there.

L: I like the waterfront. It’s just pretty, especially when it’s sunny.

N: The size of it, helps get to know people quicker and better.

  5. What’s your top tip for studying in Lincoln?
  6.

S: Don’t go out the night before!

J: For me I can only work in the day so don’t try and do it all at night. It’s easier to function and work in the day. Night time is for sleep time.

L: Don’t stress in your first year, enjoy it while you can! It’s for making friends.

N: Make sure you speak to people in the years above. They have the knowledge and have been where you are.

A: If you really need help, don’t be afraid to go to your tutors. That’s what they are there for!

  7. Favourite quote?
  8. L: “WE WERE ON A BREAK” – Ross from Friends.

N: “Veni Vidi Vici” – Julius Caesar.

J: ” I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you learn to let go, things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together” – Marilyn Monroe.

S: “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring” – Marilyn Monroe.

A: “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them” – Sylvia Plath.

  9. What’s your favourite night out?
  10. L:  Awooga. It’s on every couple of weeks at Tokyo basement and is amazing.

J: Tuesdays and Thursdays at Home. Tuesday because I have Wednesday’s off and it allowed me to have a night out  with friends. And Thursday because it’s just a good night.

S: Hmmm… Either Wednesday nights at Engine Shed because it’s sports night then so it’s really good. Oh and Fridays at Superbull! Every Lincoln student loves Superbull.

A: For me it has to be Tuesdays & Fridays at Sugarcubes. It’s a kind of grungy rock club that is AMAZING.

N: Home! On a Thursday. Always a favourite since it opened.
