Launch of Rihanna for River Island

Rihanna is a force to be reckoned with. Having just turned 25 years old the Barbadian singer has had 7 top albums in 7 years, a best-selling perfume, appeared in a movie and is now a fashion designer.

Rihanna has teamed up with RiverIsland to bring out a spring/summer collection hotly anticipated by the singer’s fans and the fashion industry.

Rihanna described the collection as ‘clothes for young women with sassy personalities’ and offers a selection of plain cami tops, basic t-shirts, vest tops in monochrome colours and had a 90’s hip hop grunge feel to it.

The collection received mixed reviews from critics who labelled it ‘uninspiring and unattractive’ and too pricey for young fashionistas.

The line was showcased in an abandoned Central London post office where Rihanna made a brief appearance at the end of the show. Following a flurry of media attention the collection was available on the brand’s website at 1am. On Oxford Street at RiverIsland’s flagship store hordes of fans lined the streets ready to get their hands on the goods. Having read reviews of the collection there appears to be a particular item that has been popular than others.

Here are some of the key pieces from the collection.

Budget hair care tips

For anyone their hair is an important part of their appearance. With an increasing amount of hair extensions companies in the UK, thousands of hair care products on the market and the latest technology for hair styling, it would be hard not to get confused. Here I have compiled a list of tips to save you time and money.

1.  Use less product

Brush your hair through before you wash it so the shampoo will work evenly through the hair. You should only be using a small amount of shampoo, about the size of a 10 pence piece, anymore it will weigh down your hair and make it greasy.

2.  Colouring

Hairdressers charge a small fortune to colour your hair and there are some great home colour kits that provide you with great results at a great price.

3 Look for offers

Boots always do great offers on hair products. Online retailers such as feelunique.co.uk also always have offers on great hair brands.

4. Look after your hair

If you look after your hair your hair won’t break and you won’t need to visit the hairdresser as regularly for trims. Use a wide tooth comb when hair is soaking wet to prevent breakage. Leaving your hair to dry naturally will also give your hair a break from heat that is damaging to your hair.

5. Don’t believe the hype

Magazines often tell us how often it is to fork out a lot of money on expensive shampoos but actually many expensive shampoos use different chemicals that’s more damaging than beneficial to your hair. A regular shampoo brand will suffice.

6. Olive oil

No fear if you’ve ran out of conditioner, pour a cupful and warm it in the microwave with 1 minute and smooth through dry hair. Wrap your hair in a warm towel and leave for twenty minutes. Shampoo out and enjoy silky smooth hair!

Review: Coconut Oil

Who doesn’t want long, soft, healthy hair?

A few weeks ago, I was browsing through one of my favourite websites, Pinterest, when I came across coconut oil, after reading through the number of benefits, I decided to give it a try.

Essentially, coconut oil is used as a hair care oil and helps it to grow and reduces the protein loss for dry and damaged hair.  Regular massage on your head ensures a dandruff free scalp and stimulates hair growth.

Coconut oil is white and solid at room temperature, can be used in foods, enhancing your immune system (perfect after too many late nights) and research has found that it can aid weight loss if your trying to shed a few pounds.

It can also be used on your skin, acting as an effective moisturizer, particularly for dry skin.

I purchased ‘Fushi Virgin Organic Coconut Oil’ on Amazon, £8 for 250g which may seem a lot considering but it really is worth it in my opinion, particularly if your using it for different purposes.  It arrived only a few days after I ordered it and after doing my research was happy that I went for a product that was free from artificial chemicals and did not test on animals.

Before using the oil I did my research, many girls on the Internet said on this particular product a little bit really did go a long way and they were right.

1. I scooped a teaspoon amount into a microwaveable dish, put into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Be careful not too use too much, remember a little bit goes a long way and too much will leave your hair greasy. When I took it out the microwave it dissolved into my hands.

2. Before applying to my dry hair I combed through ensuring that the product was distributed evenly.

3. After massaging it into my scalp and paying particular attention to the ends of my hair, I clipped it up and left for an hour. Leaving it for as long as possible meant that the oil would penetrate into the hair shaft.

4. I then washed it out, shampooing my hair twice to ensure all the oil had been washed out and condition as normal.

5. When blow drying my hair my hair did feel very smooth and manageable. It’s advised this deep condition is used twice a week to see the effects of healthy, long hair.

Give it a try at home!

The F Word

Every woman has been there you’re in a club with your friends and turn around thinking your friend has given you a cheeky squeeze when you realize, your friend, is in fact some creepy drunk guy. Not so recently this happened to me.  Instead of ignoring it I gave said guy a piece of my mind, we won’t go into the details what was said exactly but, my point is that at one point did men believe it’s acceptable to randomly grope a woman ?

Over the years I have been appalled to hear males of my age  believe that if a woman dresses a certain way she’s inviting herself as ‘fair game’.  This is absolutely ridiculous and makes me question how they come to believe this. It goes back to the old quote. “A woman brought you into this world, so you have no right to disrespect one.”I love fashion and I’ve always said that my favorite part of going out is the ‘getting ready’ phase, being with your friends listening to music, doing your hair and make up and putting on a dress and heels.

Many guys will say that when they’re groping a woman in a club then it’s just ‘banter’. No it’s not, it’s actually assault.

Do we have ourselves to blame for men believing they can get away with this? If guys knew it was un-acceptable would resist clawing at a woman for attention?

I spoke to 21 year old, civil engineering Brunel University student Elise Nolan who said: “Men think if a woman is dressing and acting provocatively then she’s ‘fair game’. for a fact their excuse will be that if a woman doesn’t want that kind of a attention then she shouldn’t be putting it out there in that way.

“Of course I completely disagree, it’s a woman’s prerogative to dress and act how she wants, we don’t have to be suppressed by male expectations and ideals. I agree with men as far as if a woman obviously all over a man and he gets the wrong idea, but when it comes to unexpected groping there is no excuse.

Men, whether they like it or not, like to still believe its a man’s world, and as such think they can act how they like towards a woman and not expect consequences. Most men in a club, groping random women having had a few too many drinks will probably think nothing of it ,they won’t consider that it’s technically assault and would never think that a woman would go as far as to have them removed from a club or arrested.

I think girls have to be wary, purely because whilst some girls may love this attention, its not fair for others to be subjected to the same behavior when it is unwanted.”

Ultimately, awareness of the issue will ensure that men know what is appropriate and what isn’t and us girls need to stick together and take a stance.

SPEAK UP.
